BUI Design System

My role
Metrics
I initiated and launched the BUI design system with developer teams. We established the guideline, and maintained the whole UI online components library.
We accelerated developing efficiency by 45% and cross-functional collaboration efficiency by 75%.

The goal of design system:

As Beibei launched more and more web-based platforms for both external products and internal efficiency tools, the design team and development teams all became overloaded. Meanwhile, although designers and developers used the same design components library, they had different interpretations, leading to inconsistent experience in the final product and redundant communication. We need an inclusivestable, and highly reusable design system.

Our goal is:
1. Maintain consistent interaction design and level user experience of enterprise-level products.
2. Help quickly respond to frequent product changes by obtaining reusable design patterns.
3. Help new designers or developers quickly familiar with the workflow.
4. Set a benchmark for further improvement.

Successful key stakeholders management.

As all of our product teams were fully focus on growing our costumer-faced business in a fast pace, a design system was something out of their objective scope. And then we had more than 10 product teams and even much more developer teams which had been working closely with design team on enterprise-level products, we found it was not practical to hold a comprehensive stakeholders meeting.

Before kick off, I talked with a front-end developer who agreed with this idea and we evaluated the ROI of this project. We calculated the time and human power we would save from a design system and prepared for the kick off together. After observing these teams workflow and collaboration style, I seized hold of several key stakeholders that could most benefit from this project, and had a kick off meeting with them. We showed our research, and after a long-time negotiating, we finally had 1 team working with us for 2 sprints and 1 developer to maintain it after launch. And the most important thing was we made a consensus on collaboration workflow.

To improve design impact in a fast growing company, we need to be highly collaborative and considerable. Any progress would be an opportunity. Do think over and over again before taking actions. Be trustworthy.

Successful project Management.

As the designer who initiated and led this project, I worked closely with my developer partners, maintained a requirement list, and managed the progress of this project.

Organize a design system:

We summarized our design components as 5 parts and also added #1 Principle and #7 Exemplars as instructions to help other stakeholders better understand this system.
